Project template - use existing project as template
Imagine you can create a project but you will not invite anyone and will keep it as a template for yourself. Just a normal project. You can even keep it inactive so it will not be in your menu and you can call it 'My template for ABC client'. Now you set it all up. Create Milestones and TODOs and all and we will allow you to create a duplicate with a trick - when you do it we will take a earliest due date - for an event, milestone or TODO (say it is 2 August) and imagine we are at November 26th (meaning time you create a duplicate from this project template) and we will ask you what date to set earliest due date - you say 12 December and we magically recalculate all other due dates you set relative to 12 December forward.
Wouldn't it be a better way to template from a real project?
Hi All,
New module is out – http://blog.freedcamp.com/2015/07/29/use-any-project-as-a-template-new-module-is-out/.
Old project templates will be removed by 1st Nov 2015.
Cheers,
Igor

It's convenient to a point to be able to copy from any project, but without the ability to specially tag particular projects as templates, and still showing archived projects in the dropdown list, this will become a problem as an account gets older. There will be so many archived projects that you won't be able to easily find the template projects.
This could be supported with a general tagging facility (to projects, tasks, milestones, time), where projects tagged as "Template" can then be filtered for (with a default filter saved) in the Template wizard dropdown.

I'd love to give it a spin. I have my "template" all ready to go with milestones and everything.

Hi Jenn,
Old templates will have to be recreated as normal projects. To keep them invisible to your team you will keep them archived/completed.
It is actually almost completed and project cloning/duplication will be a paid module.
Project templates as they are now will be commissioned probably in 6-12 months and will not be available for new users.
Here is how project duplication will work - https://www.dropbox.com/s/4ukiu0hg6ioqw1a/project_duplicator_wireframe_v_2.png?dl=0
Since you will use a project as a template to create copies you can always go to it and do whatever you want with it including changing order. Once done you can use it to create a copy from it.
With new approach ypu can even use completed real project to create a new one from it if you realized you can use it as a template after completing it.

I need more clarification please. I have templates made now and want to move things around ie change the order the tasks appear in. Your planned revamp does not seem to address this problem. Will I be able to drag and drop things in my template like I can in my project?

Hi Jason,
Let me clarify. You will be able to use existing project and assignments will remain or ... you can create a project and assign people and mark it as archived/completed straight away. Now it is essentially a template. It is clean (no comments etc), people are assigned but can not see it as it is 'completed'. You can still edit it if needed before cloning from it.

Buy why cannot we have the same people assigned to each todo. Many people use systems this way - i.e. the same person is responsible for the same tasks on many projects.
This will save a huge mount of time. Many other programs such as Collabtive do that.

What is the timeline for completion of this feature, as another person below commented, it's a make or break feature for our company as well.

I feel that you should be able to *start* a Template from an existing Project, but once a Template exists, it should be highly editable. Right now it is editable, but only partially. I'd like to see the Templates feature become generally more robust, which I think you're all working on.

Is this project planned for the future? It's the make or break feature as to whether we go with Freedcamp or another PM system all together. Thank you!

We will considet this suggestion from Bob - http://freedcamp.uservoice.com/forums/126945-suggestions-for-features/suggestions/6788599-i-would-like-to-use-a-project-template-to-start-a to allow create a project from a template by specifying last due date or first due date and recalculating all other due dates accordingly.

This would be a very nice feature, yes!

Please add this feature. I spent a LOT of time creating a project and would love if I could just make that a template rather than remaking the whole thing.
Thanks.
