Done in a slightly different format in our Daily/Weekly Recap email and always up to date page you can check any time at Freedcamp – https://freedcamp.com/daily_recap
Email also contains updates from unread notifications too -

I suggest a configurable frequency and ideally day/time.
Not everyone is using this every day during office hours.
It would be way over the top for occaisonal volunteers to get reminders everyday. They'd never sign up for it or just ignore it.
I'd really like to set it up for (certain!) users at a project/account level too rather than rely on them -

We discuss this feature now - https://freedcamp.uservoice.com/forums/126945-suggestions-for-features/suggestions/7838568-my-tasks-overview. Check it out. Probably email will be part of it. You will have a page and you can tick a checkbox to get your tasks by email every morning except weekends.

How about both (or option for both) - group by project and date.
-
What about this layout:
Overdue
- To Do 1
- To Do 2
- To Do 3Due today
- To Do 1
- To Do 2Due tomorrow
- To Do 1Due this week
- To Do 1
- To Do 2
- To Do 3
- To Do 4Due this month
- To Do 1
- To Do 2
- To Do 3
- To Do 4with last two sections sorted by due date ascending?
What about showing TODOs this way in this email:
- To Do 1 in Project 3
- To Do 2 in Project 1
- To Do 3 in Project 3Is it better than by project? Each section will be shown if there are some TODOs within.

This should certainly be a single email, allowing you to ensure you are on track to deliver against the multiple to do's
